A rare collection of songs, waltzes, polkas, chotis’ and wedding dances indigenous to New Mexico from the last three hundred years. ANTONIA APODACA (vocals, accordion & guitar), was born and still resides in Rociada, NM; and has been performing this music for most of her 88 years. She is beautifully backed by Bayou Seco.

“Since the release of Recuerdos de Rociada, my mother, Antonia Apodaca, has continued to perform regionally in New México, Texas, Wyoming and Colorado. She continues to perform with Bayou Seco and also with Trio Jalapeño de Antonia Apodaca. She has performed at festivals and venues such as the Chamizal Border Folk Festivals, the National Hispanic Cultural Center, Globalquerque International Music Festivals, Boulder Colorado Folk Festivals and numerous festivals in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival and the Festival of American Fiddle tunes in Port Townsend, WA. She has performed along with legendary artists such as “Los Lobos,” and acclaimed accordionist Flaco Jiménez and Santiago Jiménez Jr. She continues to perform regularly at venues such as the Lensic Theater in Santa Fe and the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque. She
has won numerous awards since 1994 and is considered a living legend of New Mexico.” —José Apodaca

On Dec. 20th, 2010, Antonia’s house in Rociada, El Ranchito de las Flores, burned down completely, while she was cooking her breakfast of eggs, chicharrones and jalapeño peppers. A gale force wind had blown down her chimney/stovepipe and had set the roof and the kitchen on fire. The fire grew so quickly that she was only able to grab her two accordions and her guitar. But her family and friends are rallying around her and she will never quit playing her music.

She has never been to a doctor in her life and she says “Why do I need to go to the doctor when I already have Dr. Red and Dr. Green (chiles).”

El Testimonio (The Testament)

1. Tengo unos zapatos de cuero de rez,
que por donde quiera se miran los pies.
REFRAIN: Apunte usted, señor escribano,
el dedo en la pluma, y la pluma en la mano y apunte usted.
2. Tengo una camisa de mucha finesse,
que tiene remiendos derecho y al revés.
3. Tengo una chaqueta de muy buena clas,
que ya no le queda mas que lo de atrás.
4. Tengo un jamón de rico comer,
lo tengo estampado allá en la pader.
5. Tengo una corbata me dió una muchacha,
que ya no le quedan mas que las hilachas.
6. Tengo un velís de marca estranjera,
le faltan las cachas y la abrochadera.
7. Tengo un sombrero de cuero de conejo,
que ya no le queda mas que el barbequejo.
8. Tengo unos calzones de muy buena clas,
que por donde quiera se ve lo de atrás.

Cuando Estaba Solterito (When I was Single)

1. Cuando estaba con mis padres de solterito
estaba muy bien vestido, muy bien peinado. ¡Ay!
2. Mi vestido colorado y mis tres mudas,
ahora me parezco a Júdas a mil ochento. ¡Ay!
3. Como gato del convento por los rincones,
remendado mis calzones con pito floja. ¡Ay!
4. Es lo que a mi me congoja que tan terrible estado,
que con la que me he casado ya yo reniego. ¡Ay!
5. De hambre vengo chillando, “Pido tortilla.”
Responde la taravilla. “Patas de araña, que todo el día ha estado enojada.” ¡Ay!
6. Si tuviera un peso junto pusiera tienda,
fuera dueño de las sendas de las palomas. ¡Ay!
7. Si me voy a aquellas lomas a casar liebres,
me pican aquellas fiebres con tanto sol. ¡Ay!

1. When I was with my parents, I was single.
I had beautiful clothes and my hair was well combed.
2. I had red suits and three changes,

But now I am like a Judas in rags.
3. I am like a cat in the corners of a convent,
I mend my pants with old pieces of burlap.
4. The reason I am disappointed in this terrible state
Is that the woman I married, I’ve already cursed.
5. Starving, I ask for tortillas,
The cursed woman answers, “Spider legs, I am angry all day.”
6. If I had a dollar, I’d open a store
And I’d be the owner of a house for the doves.
7. I go to the hills to catch a jackrabbit,
I will catch a fever from the sun.
8. It is not possible for me to be a good shot;
It is better for me to go to the farm but I have no oxen.
9. I’m going to make syrup, but I have no cane.
Who understands? My life is like tangled branches.
