Ken first met Dennis McGee in 1974 in Louisiana. Ken had met Mark Savoy, Lionel LeLeux, the Balfa Brothers, D.L. Menard and some others in New Orleans at the Jazz and Heritage Festival. Ken returned to Eunice with them and spent over a month visiting and playing with the various musicians. He also become good friends with Raymond François, a fine fiddler (Raymond wrote the book: "O Ye Yaille, Chére" later on). Ken kept up those contacts, even while in Germany, and when he met up with Jeanie in Eunice in early 1978, they both continued learning from traditional musicians like Dennis McGee, Bois Sec Ardoin and Kenray Fontenot, Maurice Berzas and many others until moving to New Mexico in the late spring of 1980.
